CCRUM organizes Seminar on Intellectual Property Rights

New Delhi / Lucknow: The Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), in collaboration with National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, organized a National Seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)” at its Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine (CRIUM), Lucknow on August 30, 2022.

Shri Pramod Kumar Pathak, Special Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Ayush was Chief Guest of the function. He highlighted the mandate of the Ministry of Ayush and support provided for the overall development of Unani Medicine. He stressed the importance of obtaining patents particularly for innovations in the field of Ayush systems.

Speaking as the guest of honour, Prof. Javed Musarrat, Vice Chancellor, Integral University, Lucknow emphasized the potential of Indian traditional systems of medicine, including Unani Medicine and its possible applications in IPR.

Prof. Asim Ali Khan, Director General, CCRUM, Ministry of Ayush gave a brief overview of the functioning of the CCRUM and highlighted its achievements in the area of IPR. He informed that 17 patents have been granted to the CCRUM by the Indian Patent Office (IPO), and seven patent applications are under consideration of the IPO. He also informed that measures are being taken to further strengthen the IPR related activities at the CCRUM headquarters and its peripheral institutes.

The inaugural session concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Mohammad Nafees Khan, Deputy Director Incharge, CRIUM, Lucknow.

The seminar had two technical sessions during which lectures were delivered by Dr. Vijay Laxmi Asthana, Scientist, CSIR-Traditional Knowledge Digital Library, New Delhi, Dr. Rachna Yadav, Assistant Controller, IPO, New Delhi, Dr. Karuna Shankar, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Lucknow and Dr. Vivek Srivastava, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow.

The seminar provided a platform to academia, researchers, regulators, industrialists and students to develop an understanding of IPR, innovations and practices, and promoting Unani Medicine across the globe.

Dr. Pawan Kumar, Research Officer (Pathology) Scientist-IV, Dr. R. P. Meena, Research Officer (Chemistry), Scientist-III, Dr. Jamal Akhtar, Research Officer (Unani), Scientist-III and Dr. Usama Akram, Research Officer (Unani), CCRUM coordinated the seminar.
