A team led by Dr. Imran Khan, Professor, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) successfully performed a life changing surgery on a young kid named Suryaa and gave a fresh lease of life to him. The team treated a condition known as Bilateral TMJ Ankylosis where the Lower Jaw Joint (TMJ) fuses to the base of the skull making it impossible to open an individual’s mouth.
According to his father Mr Jitendra, Suryaa sustained a fall on his chin when he was just 5 years old, since then his mouth opening has progressively decreased and had reached to a stage where he cannot open his mouth even 1mm, this eventually has lead him to be surviving on only liquid diet. Unable to eat, Suryaa has become very weak physically & malnourished. Mr Jitendra further added that he visited many private hospitals where he was told the cost of the surgery will be in lakhs and since he is a daily wager he could not bear that cost. He tried visiting premiere government institutes as well but the waiting list there was very long, he was ultimately referred to Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, JMI by a doctor, where he was examined by Dr Imran Khan, Professor, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He was explained about the condition of his child and planned for a surgery. A successful surgical procedure was done at HAHC Hospital, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research on 07 June, 2024. The 7 hour long surgery was an extremely challenging one, due to anaesthetic challenges & the surgical risks involved.
The team of anaesthesia was led by Prof Kharat M Butt, Dr. Pratibha Panjiar & team. The surgery involved removal of the fused bony mass between the lower jaw joint (TMJ) & skull base and creation of a new joint. For creating a new joint, Cartilage from the 5th & 7th Rib bone was harvested & transplanted at the surgical site ensuring that the lower jaw also grows alongside with other facial bones when Suryaa reaches teenage and then adulthood. The surgical team was led by Prof Imran Khan along with his team members Dr. Jamil Qazi, Dr. Nancy Matthew & Dr. Iqbal.
After the surgery, Suryaa is able to open his mouth almost after 3 years and is able to chew. Prof Imran Khan the lead surgeon informed that Suryaa will be under close follow up and will undergo extensive jaw physiotherapy exercise for next few months to years.
The Medical Superintendent of HAHC Hospital Prof Musharraf Hussain congratulated the surgical & the anaesthetic team on the successful execution of the procedure & expressed his contentment.
