FLAG-OFF OF LEG-5 OF SPECIAL SAILING EXPEDITION: A CELEBRATION OF INDIA’S MARITIME HERITAGE

The fifth leg of the Special Sailing Expedition with the inspiring motto “Bhartiyan Nadiyan, Sanskrityon ki Jananni” (Indian Rivers: Mother of Civilizations) was ceremoniously flagged off on 23 Nov 24 in Patna by Major General A S Bajaj, Additional Director General, NCC Directorate Bihar & Jharkhand. This pioneering initiative which began on 21 Oct24 in Kanpur and will culminate in Kolkata on 20 Dec 24, is a tribute to India’s rich maritime traditions and an effort to inspire the youth toward a life of service and adventure.

 

The expedition spans approximately 1200 Kms along the Ganges and Hooghly rivers, involving six phases and the participation of 528 Naval Wing cadets from across India. Each phase focuses on building camaraderie, discipline, and environmental consciousness among the cadets, while showcasing the cultural vibrancy of India’s riverine ecosystems.

Leg-5 Highlights

Route and Participants. Leg-5 of the expedition commenced from Patna and will conclude at Maniyari. Total 96 cadets from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Bihar & Jharkhand Directorates are participating in this phase.

Community Engagement. Cadets will engage with local NCC groups, contribute to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by cleaning riverbanks and raise awareness about reducing plastic waste.Through Nukkad Nataks (street plays), the cadets will promote India’s cultural heritage and highlight the importance of environmental conservation .

The ADG conveyed the best wishes of the Director General NCC to all participating cadets, commending their dedication and enthusiasm.Major General Bajaj expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Bihar State Government for their support, including medical assistance, security at ghats and logistical aid, which have been instrumental in ensuring the expedition’s success.

 

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Major General Bajaj emphasized the importance of rivers in shaping India’s culture and history, stating”This expedition is not just about sailing; it is about celebrating our heritage, preserving our environment and inspiring our youth to embody the values of discipline and service. I am immensely proud of our cadets, who are not only honing their skills but also contributing meaningfully to society through their efforts in environmental conservation and cultural promotion.”

The ADG also extended his appreciation to the expedition leader, officersand staff for their relentless efforts in organizing and managing this ambitious initiative, which has been a resounding success across all phases.

The Special Sailing Expedition exemplifies the NCC’s commitment to nurturing responsible and service-oriented citizens. As the cadets embark on this journey, they continue to inspire communities along the route to protect India’s rivers and preserve its cultural legacy.
