Indian Muslim Leaders Condemn Harsh Treatment of Minorities in Bangladesh

New Delhi,Prominent Indian Muslim leaders have expressed deep concern over the alleged mistreatment and victimization of minorities in Bangladesh, describing the incidents as “appalling” and “unislamic.” In two separate but similar letters addressed to Bangladesh’s President, His Excellency Mohammed Shahabuddin, and Chief Advisor of the Interim Government, Mr. Mohammad Yunus, the leaders unequivocall y condemned the reported atrocities and urged immediate corrective action. The letters, signed by distinguished figures such as Chief Election Commissioner of India; Dr. S.Y. Quraishi Dr. Najeeb Jung , , former former Lieutenant Governor of Delhi; Staff; Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah Mr. Shahid Siddiqui , former Deputy Chief of Army , former Member of Parliament; and Shervani Mr. Saeed Mustafa , an industrialist and former president of the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India, emphasized the violation of Islamic tenets and the principles of democracy. “It is dismaying and disappointing to witness behavior that goes against the teachings of Islam and the path shown by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH),” the letters stated. “Islam stresses the protection of minorities, and acts of cowardice like this tarnish its im age while highlighting the failure of democracy in safeguarding vulnerable populations.” The leaders underscored that the protection of minorities is a fundamental test of any democratic society and called on the Bangladeshi government to act decisively against communal elements. They highlighted the plight of victims unable to access legal de fense due to threats against lawyers, labeling this situation a “most distressing development.” Warning of broader implications for South Asia, the letters stated: “If the present government does not curb this deplorable situation, it would reflect tacit support for such actions.
