Bhagalpur: Savitribai Phule was an important social reformer and the first female teacher of India, who dedicated her life to women’s education and emancipation. She was born in 1831 and along with her husband Jyoti Rao Phule, played a major role in the struggle for women’s education and rights. Her services were not only important for women’s education but also proved to be a milestone in laying the foundation of social reforms in India.
Savitribai Phule established India’s first girl’s school in Pune in 1848, at that time women’s education was considered a taboo, but she fought against this stereotype. She not only established schools for women but also raised her voice against caste and gender discrimination, campaigned against early marriage and atrocities on women, and supported widow remarriage. Along with her colleague Fatima Sheikh, she did important work for women’s education and empowerment. Dr. Jamal also acknowledged the services of Ruqaiya Sakhawat of Bhagalpur and said that in the beginning of the twentieth century, a women’s madrasa was established in Bhagalpur, which is not only a remarkable but also a commendable step. He further said that Savitribai Phule had said that if the last woman standing in the queue is not adorned with education, then the society, nation and country cannot move forward on the path of development. On this occasion, Gul Afshan Parveen also addressed and emphasized the importance of women’s education and called upon the parents to wake up. She said that personalities like Savitribai Phule and Ruqaiya Sakhawat have made a huge sacrifice for women’s education and more efforts are needed at the social level to fulfill their mission.
