Agra Metro : Traction system regenerating energy from braking of Metro; saving upto Rs. 50 Lakh worth energy in one year.

In yet another commendable attempt to save energy and optimise operational costs, Agra Metro Project is the first DC metro system in India to successfully commission and operate a special inverter system at Captain Shubham Gupta Traction Substation for 750 V DC Third Rail Traction System.

The Inverter system converts 750 V Direct Current (DC) power regenerated through the train’s braking into Alternating Current (33 kV AC) and reroute the same to the Metro System for reuse.

It is to be noted that no other Metro Project in India, that is running on the Third Rail DC Traction System has commissioned such type of arrangement for energy conservation.

The Commissioning works was done by UPMRC along with the contractor M/s Larsen and Toubro Limited and M/s Secheron representatives.

Speaking on the same, Managing Director UPMRC Shri Sushil Kumar said, “The system is in service since last one year i.e. from March 2024 and till February 2025, approx. 670 MWH energy has been utilised by the inverter for the priority section providing saving of approx. Rs. 50 Lakhs to UPMRC which would have been wasted if such system was not installed.

As an orgaisation, UPMRC is fully committed to conservation of energy and utilising the resources in the most efficient manner”, he added.

In the future, there is plan to install total 4 units of such Inverter systems in complete Corridor-1 and Corridor -2 of Agra Metro. After commissioning of all 4-inverter system of Agra metro project, savings of approximately 1.6 Crores per year to UPMRC is expected through this system.
