AGRA Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav has described the vandalism and attack on Suman’s house as a “pre-planned conspiracy” and directly blamed the BJP government for ‘funding’ the Agra violence.
The 26 March attack on the residence of Rajya Sabha MP and senior Samajwadi Party leader Ramjilal Suman by members of Karni Sena, as well as the local Rajput community of Agra, has stirred a hornet’s nest. The attack was a result of Ramjilal Suman’s recent controversial statement in the parliament against Rana Sanga, calling the Rajput chieftain as a ‘Traitor’ for inviting Babur to India. The statement had evoked sharp reactions from various segments of the society, including the Rajput community.
On Saturday, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav arrived in Agra and visited Suman’s house, meeting his family members and expressing his concerns about their safety. Hundreds of Samajwadi Party workers were assembled on the roads, and Suman’s house, to give a rousing welcome to their leader.
“The attack on Ramjilal Suman’s house did not happen suddenly. Swords were brandished, murder threats were made against Suman. This attack was a conspiracy. Attempts are being made to intimidate the PDA (backward, dalit and minority) society. The violence in Agra was funded by the government. All this was done so that the Rajput society can be united under the BJP flag,” Akhilesh said.
Amidst this entire controversy, the Civil Court (Senior Division) of Agra gave an important verdict on Friday. The civil suit filed by the Arya Sanskriti Sanrakshan Trust against Ramjilal Suman was dismissed.
In this petition, advocate Ajay Pratap Singh, on behalf of the trust, had argued that Suman’s statement given in Parliament was against historical facts and insulting. Citing several historical texts and research, he claimed that Rana Sanga was a symbol of Indian self-respect and struggle, not a traitor.
However, the court dismissed the petition on Friday even before the scheduled date of hearing on May 23, 2025, saying that the statement made by the MP inside Parliament comes under privileges under Article 105 of the Constitution and judicial action cannot be taken on it.
This decision has provided legal reprieve to Suman; however, the unrest on the streets continues unabated. Agra Police has registered an FIR against several unknown people in connection with the incident and the investigation is on.
The focus of the people as well as political analysts is currently on this hot political topic concerning the future stance adopted by the Rajput community and the government, as well as the trajectory the Samajwadi Party will pursue in this unfolding situation.
