Khateeb of Masjid Nehar Wali discusses funeral-related food customs, orphan welfare and religious practices during Friday sermon; urges people to support grieving families
Agra:Mohammad Iqbal, the khateeb (preacher) of Masjid Nehar Wali in Agra, addressed issues concerning food arrangements at the homes of deceased persons and the rights of orphans during his Friday sermon. He called for greater sensitivity towards bereaved families and encouraged people to reconsider certain customs associated with death.
Mohammad Iqbal said that families dealing with the death of a loved one are already facing emotional distress. Instead of placing the responsibility of preparing food and hosting visitors on them, neighbours and relatives should arrange meals and extend practical support.
Referring to verse 10 of Surah An-Nisa in the Holy Quran, he highlighted the importance of protecting the rights and property of orphans. He said that caring for orphans and helping vulnerable members of society are important responsibilities.
During the sermon, he also referred to the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), emphasising simplicity, patience and prayer during times of grief. He urged people to help bereaved families by arranging food for them rather than expecting them to serve visitors.
Iqbal also expressed his views on customs such as the teeja, daswan, chaliswan and death anniversaries, urging Muslims to give priority to the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.
Citing a Hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari, he highlighted the virtue of caring for orphans and recalled the Prophet’s assurance of closeness in Paradise for those who support them.
He appealed to people to uphold the rights of orphans and the needy and to make compassion, service and assistance the focus of their response to bereavement.
The sermon concluded with a prayer for proper religious understanding and the ability to follow the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.
