Agra,Muhammad Iqbal, the preacher of Masjid Nehar Wali in Sikandra, delivered a thought-provoking sermon during today’s Friday prayers (Jumu’ah), raising a vital question for worshippers:
“Do we pray with understanding?”
Expressing concern, Muhmmad Iqbal said that when a Muslim is blessed by Allah with the ability to offer prayers, they recite Surah Al-Fatihah, At-Tahiyat, and Durood Sharif millions of times throughout their life. These prayers are among the most revered words in existence, yet sadly, many Muslims remain unaware of their true meanings and significance.
He emphasized:
“The essence of the prayer, described as the ascension (Mi’raj) of the believer, lies in praying with comprehension and devotion.”
Muhmmad Iqbal illustrated this with an example: if a person recites “Rabbi ighfir li warhamni” during the prostration (sujood) without knowing its meaning, and later learns that it translates to “O my Lord! Forgive me and have mercy upon me”, the prayer will then be felt deeply from the heart, tears may flow, and the spiritual impact of the prayer will be profoundly different.
He also addressed the challenge for those unfamiliar with Arabic:
“Nowadays, small booklets translating the prayers are readily available. Study and memorize them, and you will experience the true joy, humility, and spirituality in prayer.”
Concluding his sermon, Muhmmad Iqbal prayed:
“May Allah grant us the ability to understand and sincerely feel our prayers, and to manifest their true spiritual effects in our lives. Ameen Ya Rabb al-Alameen.”
