Agra: Doctors at Sarojini Naidu Medical College (S.N. Medical College), Agra, have once again demonstrated their medical excellence by successfully performing a highly complex and rare Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPSS) procedure, saving the life of a 32-year-old critically ill patient.
Congratulating the medical team on this remarkable achievement, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Prashant Gupta said that the successful outcome was the result of close coordination among the Departments of Interventional Radiology, Anaesthesiology, Gastroenterology, and other allied specialties. He praised the team for completing the intricate procedure without complications after nearly three and a half hours of dedicated effort. He added that the availability of such advanced super-specialty services at S.N. Medical College is a major relief for critically ill patients across the region.
Patient’s Condition
The 32-year-old patient was suffering from chronic liver disease and portal hypertension. Due to the severity of the condition, he developed refractory ascites, causing excessive fluid accumulation in the abdomen, along with variceal bleeding. His condition had deteriorated to the point where nearly two litres of fluid had to be drained from his abdomen every day.
What is the TIPSS Procedure?
To save the patient’s life, doctors decided to perform the TIPSS procedure under general anaesthesia. The operation lasted approximately three and a half hours. During the procedure, a stent was inserted through a vein in the neck to create a channel between the hepatic vein and the portal vein inside the liver. This bypass reduces pressure in the portal venous system and provides the patient with valuable time before a future liver transplant may become necessary.
Successful Recovery
Following the procedure, the patient remained under close medical observation for five days. After showing steady improvement and experiencing no post-operative complications, he was discharged from the hospital in stable condition.
Team Behind the Success
The successful procedure was made possible through the combined efforts of specialists from the Departments of Interventional Radiology, Gastroenterology, Anaesthesiology, Medicine, and Cardiology.
Medical Team:
- Interventional Radiology: Dr. Pallav Gupta and PG Resident Dr. Karamveer
- Gastroenterology: Dr. Raghav Singhal
- Anaesthesiology: Dr. Rajeev Puri, Dr. Lavpriya, and Dr. Meghna
Dr. Pallav Gupta acknowledged the valuable guidance and support of Dr. Hari Singh, Head of the Department of Radiodiagnosis. He also appreciated the dedicated efforts of Dr. Atiharsh Mohan, who closely monitored and managed the patient before and after the procedure, contributing significantly to its successful outcome.
