Agra: Holi is a major and traditional festival of the Hindu community, celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy by our fellow countrymen. On this occasion, the teachings of Islam guide us toward patience, harmony, good character, and kind behavior with our neighbors.
Muhammad Iqbal, Khateeb of Masjid Nahar Wali, Sikandra, Agra, stated that Muslims should remain firm upon their faith while spreading the message of peace, love, and brotherhood. If someone attempts to apply color on you during Holi, you may politely and respectfully decline and explain that it is not appropriate for you.
He clarified that if color is applied despite this, there is no need to panic or fall into confusion. The color can be washed off with water, and stains on clothes can be cleaned with soap or detergent. Linking the application of Holi colors to Hellfire or any religious punishment in Islam is completely baseless and incorrect.
It is narrated by Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Whoever finds any impurity on himself should cleanse it immediately.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 354)
This Hadith teaches that if any impurity or unclean substance touches a person, it should simply be cleaned. Therefore, if color is applied, performing ghusl (ritual bath) or properly washing oneself is sufficient.
He further stated that our fundamental principle is to avoid shirk (associating partners with Allah) and immoral actions while safeguarding our faith and belief. At the same time, as much as possible, we should strengthen bonds of love, harmony, and mutual respect within society.
In conclusion, he appealed to the public to avoid rumors during the festive season, share accurate information, and maintain an atmosphere of peace and brotherhood.
