Agra: In the Sikandra area of Agra, at Masjid Nahar Wali, Khateeb Mohammad Iqbal delivered a powerful and thought-provoking Friday sermon, raising an important question: Are today’s Muslims truly representing the essence of Islam?
In his address, he said that numerous misconceptions exist about Islam and Muslims in the present time. He emphasized the need for serious introspection, questioning whether these misunderstandings are, in fact, a result of Muslims’ own conduct.
He pointed out a stark contrast within society—while a large section struggles below the poverty line, extravagant spending on lavish weddings, luxury resorts, and unnecessary customs continues to rise within the same community.
Addressing religious scholars and community leaders, he urged them to take a firm stand against wasteful spending and to promote simplicity, especially in solemnizing marriages. He stressed that Nikah, being a sacred institution, should be made simple and accessible.
Khateeb Mohammad Iqbal also expressed concern over the educational and healthcare backwardness of the Muslim community. He noted the lack of quality hospitals and modern educational institutions, which forces dependence on others. He highlighted the urgent need for structured planning for the education, health, and employment of the country’s youth, including a significant number of Muslim youngsters.
Towards the end of his sermon, he spoke about Hajj and Umrah, stating that Hajj is obligatory only once in a lifetime. He questioned the practice of repeatedly performing Hajj and Umrah while neglecting other social and economic responsibilities, urging people to reflect on this issue.
He concluded with a prayer, asking Allah to grant the right understanding and the ability to act upon it.
