Mecca: The door of the Kaaba is one of the most prominent features of Masjid al-Haram, reflecting both deep religious significance and extraordinary Islamic craftsmanship. For centuries, it has symbolized the sanctity and reverence of the House of Allah for millions of Muslims around the world.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the design of the Kaaba’s door beautifully combines spiritual importance, artistic excellence, and master craftsmanship. It stands as a clear testament to the dedication of Islamic civilizations in preserving and serving the Two Holy Mosques.
Height Designed with Wisdom
The door is positioned approximately 2.25 meters above the ground level of the Mataf area. This elevated placement reflects historical wisdom, as it helped protect the Kaaba from floods that once affected Mecca. The door itself measures about 3.1 meters in height and 1.9 meters in width.
Made of Pure Gold
The Kaaba’s door is crafted from 24-carat pure gold and weighs around 280 kilograms, making it one of the most valuable and unique doors in the world.
Renovation in 1979
In 1979, during the reign of King Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the door was redesigned and replaced. The new door was made entirely of pure gold, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to preserving the sanctity and beauty of the Kaaba.
Masterpiece of Islamic Calligraphy
The exterior of the door is adorned with intricate engravings of Quranic verses and religious inscriptions, crafted in elegant Arabic calligraphy. It represents the highest standards of Islamic decorative art and metal craftsmanship.
Opened Only on Special Occasions
The Kaaba door is opened only on special occasions, particularly for the ceremonial cleansing (Ghusl) of the Kaaba. This ritual takes place once or twice a year using Zamzam water mixed with rose essence.
Custodianship of the Key
The key of the Kaaba remains with the Al-Shaiba family, a responsibility passed down since the time of Prophet Muhammad.
