Agra: Imam Khatib Muhammad Iqbal, based in the Sikandra Mosque, delivered a significant and thought-provoking khutbah (sermon) during Jumu’ah today. He emphasized that nowadays, people are wearing half-pants as a fashion statement both at home and outside, considering it a symbol of status. However, he pointed out that this practice is against the teachings of Islam.
He explained that such attire distances people from the guidance of Allah Taa’la and His Messenger ﷺ. Wearing half-pants leaves the knees exposed, while in Islam, covering the ‘satr’ (parts of the body that must be concealed) is obligatory. The question he posed was: Which religion or way are we following? In reality, we are blindly imitating others and influenced by their customs, whereas we should be guides for others ourselves.
Imam Iqbal cited Surah Al-A’raf (Ayat 26) from the Qur’an, saying: “O children of Adam! We have provided you with clothing to cover your shame and as adornment. But the best of clothes is Taqwa (piety). This is one of Allah’s signs, so that people may take heed.”
He also referenced a Hadith, mentioning that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do you not know that Raan (a type of clothing) is also part of Sitr (covering)?” (Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 4014).
He expressed regret that many are acting against both the teachings of the Qur’an and Hadith, and even take pride in doing so. It is a grave negligence that a girl goes to school wearing a scarf, yet her father himself wears half-pants.
He further pointed out that some people wear inappropriate attire, such as lower garments, even during Jumu’ah prayers in the mosque. Would they wear such clothes to a banquet or event? Certainly not. So why do they neglect to wear better, modest clothing when attending Allah’s house? Islam emphasizes wearing clean and decent clothes for Jumu’ah prayer, but many ignore this guidance.
In conclusion, Imam Iqbal prayed that Allah Taa’la grant us understanding, good judgment, and the ability to follow Islam properly so that we can shape our lives according to Islamic teachings. Ameen.
