Agra. Muhammad Iqbal, the Khateeb of Nahar Wali Mosque in Sikandra, highlighted the importance and benefits of silence during his Friday sermon today. He began his address by quoting a well-known Hadith:
“Man samata naja” (Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 2501),
which means “Whoever remains silent attains salvation.”
He said that silence contains great wisdom. Many times, remaining quiet proves to be far more beneficial than speaking. Silence protects a person from numerous troubles and conflicts. Remaining silent implies that one reflects before speaking, plans thoughtfully, and then expresses ideas with care. Such words carry weight and leave a stronger impact on listeners.
Khateeb Muhammad Iqbal referred to Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 83 of the Holy Quran, in which Allah commands:
“And speak good words to people.”
He also cited Hadith No. 6018 from Sahih Bukhari, quoting the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as saying:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.”
He urged people to introspect in the light of the Quran and Hadith and question whether they truly follow these teachings. Despite believing in Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, and the Hereafter, people often speak without thinking, which leads only to harm.
However, he clarified that silence does not mean remaining a passive spectator when it is time to speak the truth. Understanding the situation and context is essential. Where speaking out is necessary, one must stand for truth and justice.
In conclusion, he said that if people adopt the principle of “Think before you speak” in their lives, then by the grace of Allah, they will not only be saved from many difficulties but will also earn respect and dignity in society.
He ended with a prayer:
“May Allah grant all of us the ability to act upon these teachings. Ameen, O Lord of the Worlds.”
