Agra: During the Friday sermon at Masjid Nahar Wali, Sikandra, Khateeb Muhammad Iqbal addressed the congregation and emphasized the proper and effective use of Zakat.
He recited verse 55 of Surah Al-Ma’idah from the Holy Qur’an:
“And those who believe, establish prayer, and give Zakat, and they bow before Allah.”
He explained that Zakat is one of the most powerful social and economic systems in Islam. It purifies wealth, strengthens society, and has the potential to eliminate begging and dependency. However, it is unfortunate that despite having such a comprehensive system, many in the Muslim community continue to struggle with poverty.
He noted that in places where a structured Bait-ul-Mal system exists, conditions are relatively better because assistance is provided in an organized and dignified manner. Since such a system is not available everywhere, individuals must take responsibility and act wisely.
Muhammad Iqbal urged those who pay significant amounts of Zakat not to distribute it randomly in small portions among many individuals. Instead, they should carefully select one genuinely deserving person, gather complete information about their circumstances, and provide enough financial support to help them start a small business or skill-based work that they can manage independently.
The aim should be to empower that individual so that in the future they no longer need to ask for help and, eventually, become someone who gives Zakat instead of receiving it.
He stated: “If this task is not easy, it is also not impossible. Our target should be that this year we reduce at least one Zakat recipient from society.”
He encouraged the congregation to take the first step themselves and motivate others to join this initiative. If implemented sincerely and systematically, this approach can bring about meaningful and long-term positive change in society.
May Allah grant us the ability to utilize Zakat wisely and help the needy with dignity. Ameen.
